BIO Cucumber — The One You Can Actually Eat Unpeeled, and the One That Actually Tastes of Cucumber
Most conventional cucumbers are waxed to extend shelf life and improve appearance — which means the peel is not food-safe and must be removed, discarding significant nutrition and texture. Our BIO cucumbers are unwaxed and grown without synthetic pesticides, making the thin skin entirely safe to eat — and worth eating. The skin adds crunch, flavour, and the majority of the cucumber's fibre and chlorophyll content. Beyond the skin question, real BIO cucumbers from Spain simply taste more intensely of cucumber — the flavour is clean, fresh, and genuinely cooling, rather than the watered-down, faintly flavoured experience of waxed supermarket cucumbers. Cucumbers are approximately 96% water — making them one of the most hydrating foods available — and contain Vitamin K, Vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants including cucurbitacins and fisetin, studied for anti-inflammatory properties.

Why cucumbers are different — what's on a conventional cucumber
Conventional cucumbers are coated in food-grade wax (carnauba, shellac, or petroleum-based) post-harvest to reduce moisture loss and improve appearance. The wax is considered food-safe in the EU but traps pesticide residues underneath and makes the skin unpleasant to eat. Cucumbers skip the wax and the pesticides — the skin is clean, thin, and actually flavourful. Wash under cold water, dry, and eat whole.

How to use cucumbers
Unpeeled thin rounds: the classic Romanian salad base (salată de castraveți) with vinegar, dill, and red onion. Chunks: paired with hummus, tzatziki, or labneh. Grated (unpeeled): squeezed dry and mixed into tzatziki or raita. Spiralised: raw cucumber noodles dressed with sesame, soy, and ginger. Quick pickles: cucumber, white vinegar, salt, dill, and garlic — ready in 2 hours, excellent with everything.

How to store cucumbers
Cucumbers lose moisture faster than waxed ones — wrap individually in a dry cloth or paper towel and store in the fridge crisper drawer. Keeps 7-10 days. Do not store near apples, tomatoes, or bananas — they release ethylene gas that accelerates yellowing. Cut cucumber: wrap tightly in film, fridge, use within 2 days.
Eat unpeeled — the skin is the best part. Slice thin for salads, chunk for dipping, or spiralise as a pasta alternative. Make tzatziki, cold cucumber soup, or quick-pickle in vinegar and dill overnight.
96% water — exceptionally hydrating. Contains Vitamin K, Vitamin C, and potassium. Antioxidants including cucurbitacins and fisetin studied for anti-inflammatory effects. Skin is safe to eat — maximum nutrition retained.
