Ciruelas — Sweet-Tart Stone Fruit, Ready in a Few Days
Plums arrive with a light dusting on the skin called bloom, a natural waxy coating that's actually a good sign — it means the fruit hasn't been handled too roughly. Colour is a rough guide at best, since it varies enormously by variety, from deep purple to red to yellow-green, so it's not the test to rely on. The real check is a gentle press near the stem: ripe plums give slightly, similar to a ripe peach, while a rock-hard one needs a few more days at room temperature. Once ripe, the juicy, sweet-tart flesh inside is at its best eaten fresh, though plums also hold up well cooked into jams and desserts.

How to tell it's ripe
Don't rely on colour — it varies by variety. Press gently near the stem; ripe gives slightly, similar to a ripe peach.

How to use Ciruelas
Eat fresh, skin and all, or halve and pit for salads, tarts, and jams. The flesh separates easily from the pit once ripe.

How to store Ciruelas
Unripe: room temperature, a few days to ripen. Ripe: refrigerate, use within 3-5 days. Cut fruit: airtight container, use within 1-2 days.
Eat them whole, straight from the hand, once ripe — the sweet-tart flesh needs nothing added when it's at its best.
Rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, and antioxidants — a genuinely nutrient-dense stone fruit, especially when the skin (also edible) is included.
