Granadilla — Passion Fruit's Sweeter, Gentler Relative

Granadilla and passion fruit come from the same family, and people mix them up constantly, but they're genuinely different fruits with different personalities. Granadilla is the bigger, gentler one — roughly orange-sized, with a hard, smooth shell that stays smooth even when fully ripe, unlike passion fruit's shell, which wrinkles. Inside is where the real difference shows: instead of tart orange pulp, granadilla has translucent, jelly-like flesh with a mild sweetness carrying notes of kiwi and melon, studded with crunchy, entirely edible seeds. Because it's so much less acidic than passion fruit, it's genuinely enjoyable eaten straight from the shell, no sugar required. Ripeness comes down to colour and weight rather than touch: a ripe granadilla is a deep orange-yellow all over and feels heavy for its size.

  • How to tell when it's ripe

Unlike passion fruit, the shell stays smooth. Look for a deep, even orange-yellow colour all over, and a fruit that feels heavy for its size.

  • How to cut & use Granadilla

Crack or cut the shell open and scoop out the pulp and seeds with a spoon. No need to remove the seeds — they're crunchy and edible.

  • How to store Granadilla

Keep at room temperature until fully coloured and ripe, then refrigerate and use within a week. Once cracked open, use the same day.
