Guanabana — Also Called Soursop, and Genuinely Enormous
Guanabana, also widely known as soursop, is one of the larger fruits you'll come across, sometimes reaching the size of a small watermelon, with dark green skin covered in soft, pliable spines that ease off easily once the fruit is ripe. It continues ripening after picking, softening from dark green to a lighter yellow-green over a few days, and a gentle press should meet real give once it's ready — a firm one simply isn't there yet. Inside, the creamy white flesh is genuinely juicy and slightly fibrous, with a sweet-tart flavour often compared to a blend of banana, pineapple, and strawberry, wrapped around large black seeds that aren't eaten.

-
How to tell it's ripe
It softens after picking — wait for the skin to lighten from dark to pale green and give real way under gentle pressure, not just a slight yield.
-
How to cut & use Guanabana
Halve it, scoop the flesh away from the tough central core, and pick out the large black seeds. Eat fresh, or blend into juice, straining out the seeds first.
-
How to store Guanabana
Unripe: room temperature, a few days to ripen. Ripe: refrigerate, use within 2-3 days — it's delicate once soft. Scooped flesh: freeze for longer storage.
Halve it, scoop out the flesh, and pick out the seeds, then eat it plain or blend into a juice — it's a popular fresh drink across Latin America.
Rich in vitamin C, fibre, and antioxidants — and given its size, a single guanabana provides a genuinely substantial amount of both.
