Guava — The Tropical Fruit With 4× the Vitamin C of Oranges and an Aroma That Fills the Room

Guava is the tropical fruit that announces itself before you open it. The aroma — intensely floral, sweet, and tropical — fills the room from the moment the box is opened, which is why it's used in perfumery as well as cooking. The flesh is typically pink to salmon-coloured, surrounding small edible seeds, with a flavour that combines pear, strawberry, and tropical sweetness into something entirely its own. Beyond its extraordinary aroma, guava is genuinely exceptional nutritionally: it contains approximately 228mg of Vitamin C per 100g — roughly four times the concentration found in oranges, making it one of the highest Vitamin C fruits available. Also rich in lycopene (the same antioxidant as tomatoes, at higher concentration), fibre, potassium, and Vitamins A and B. The entire fruit is edible — skin, flesh, and seeds all contribute different textures and nutrients.

  • How to tell when guava is ripe

Ripe guava smells strongly and sweetly tropical — if you can't smell it from arm's length, it needs more time. The skin softens from pale green to light yellow-green. Press gently — a ripe guava gives like a ripe pear. Still firm and odourless? Room temperature 1-3 days. Once the aroma is strong, it's ready.

  • How to eat guava

The whole fruit is edible. Wash well and eat like an apple — the skin is thin and nutritious. Or halve and scoop. The seeds are edible and add crunch. For smoothies: blend whole with milk or coconut water. For juice: blend and strain. The flavour pairs brilliantly with lime, ginger, chilli, and mint.

  • How to store guava

Unripe: room temperature until fully fragrant and slightly soft. Ripe: fridge in a bag, up to 4-5 days. Cut: airtight container, fridge, 2 days. Guava's strong aroma can transfer to other foods in the fridge — store in a sealed bag or container. Freeze: peel, remove seeds if desired, freeze in portions. Frozen guava makes excellent smoothies.
