Lychees — Small Fruit, Big Reputation for a Reason
Native to southern China and grown for well over a thousand years, lychee is one of the fruits that genuinely lives up to the hype — sweet, floral, and juicy in a way that's hard to compare to anything else. The rough, leathery skin is pink to red and peels away easily with a thumbnail, revealing translucent white flesh wrapped around a single glossy brown seed, which isn't eaten. One thing worth knowing: lychee skin browns fairly quickly after harvest even when the fruit inside is perfectly fine — so don't judge purely by skin colour. A better check is the flesh itself once you peel one: it should be firm, juicy, and smell sweetly floral, not fermented. Lychees don't ripen further once picked, so what's in the box is ready to eat immediately.

How to tell they're good to eat
Skin browns quickly after harvest even when the fruit is fine, so don't judge by colour alone. Peel one — the flesh should be firm and smell sweetly floral, not fermented.
-
How to cut & use Lychees
Pinch or peel the skin off with your fingers or a thumbnail — no knife needed. Bite around the smooth seed at the centre, which isn't eaten.
-
How to store Lychees
Refrigerate as soon as they arrive, use within 5-7 days. Peeled fruit: airtight container, use within 1-2 days.
Peel with a thumbnail and eat fresh, straight from the skin — their floral sweetness also works beautifully in fruit salads or blended into cocktails.
A good source of vitamin C and antioxidants, with very few calories per fruit — a light, refreshing way to satisfy a sweet craving.
