Mamey — Once Called the "Fruit of the Gods" by the Maya
Mamey has been cultivated since Maya times, and it's easy to see why it earned a reverent nickname once you taste it: creamy, salmon-orange flesh with a flavour that lands somewhere between sweet potato, pumpkin pie, and honey, sometimes with a faint hint of almond. The football-shaped fruit has thick, scruffy brown skin that gives no visual hints of what's inside, and unripe mamey is genuinely unpleasant — bitter and starchy, nothing like the finished product. Ripening happens the same way as an avocado: it may arrive firm and needs a few days at room temperature, ready when it gives slightly to a gentle squeeze, particularly near the stem.

-
How to tell it's ripe
If it arrives firm, leave it at room temperature for a few days. Ripe mamey gives slightly to gentle pressure, especially near the stem — the same test as an avocado.
-
How to cut & use Mamey
Halve lengthwise around the large single seed, twist apart, and scoop the flesh with a spoon. Great fresh, or blended into smoothies and ice cream.
-
How to store Mamey
Unripe: room temperature, out of direct sun, a few days to soften. Ripe: refrigerate, use within 3-5 days. Cut fruit: airtight container, use within 1-2 days.
Halve it, remove the large seed, and scoop the flesh with a spoon — or blend it into a milkshake, a popular way to enjoy mamey across Latin America.
Rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium — a creamy, dessert-like fruit that's genuinely doing more nutritionally than it lets on.
