Azucar — A Small Heirloom Mango Named for Its Sweetness

"Azucar" is Spanish for sugar, and this heirloom variety — long grown in home gardens across Latin America before it made its way to wider markets — earned the name honestly. It's noticeably smaller than commercial varieties like Kent or Tommy Atkins, with a thin skin that peels away easily, and it packs an intensity of sweetness that larger, more fibrous mangoes rarely match. Because it's a lesser-known variety without the standardised ripening charts of Kent or Ataulfo, the safest test is the one that works for any mango: press gently — ripe fruit gives slightly under light pressure — and check for a sweet, fruity aroma at the stem end. Its small size and thin skin also mean it softens and ripens a touch faster than larger mangoes, so keep a closer eye on it once it starts to give.
