Marmande — France's Answer to "A Tomato That Actually Tastes Like a Tomato"

First bred in 1897 by the French seed house Vilmorin, Marmande takes its name from the town in southwest France where it was developed, and it's remained one of Europe's most planted heirlooms ever since. You'll recognise it instantly by its shape: ribbed and slightly flattened, with pronounced lobes that give it an irregular, almost sculptural silhouette compared to a standard round tomato. The skin is thin and softens noticeably as it ripens, almost "melting" against the meaty flesh underneath, which carries fewer seeds and less juice than most varieties. The flavour balances sweetness and acidity without either one dominating — the kind of straightforward, honest tomato taste that got lost somewhere in the shift toward uniform, shelf-stable commercial varieties. It holds its shape reasonably well when cooked, but really it's built for fresh eating: thick slices on a sandwich, or the centrepiece of a summer salad.

  • How to tell it's ripe

Look for deep red colour and skin that's started to soften — Marmande's thin skin visibly relaxes as it ripens. A gentle squeeze should meet slight give.

  • How to cut & use Marmande Tomatoes

Slice thick around the irregular ribbing — the low-seed, low-juice flesh makes for clean slices that won't make a sandwich soggy.

  • How to store Marmande Tomatoes

Room temperature, out of direct sun, for the best flavour and texture. Refrigerate only if very ripe, and use within 4-5 days.
