Piel de Sapo — Spain's Melon, Named for Looking Like a Toad
"Piel de sapo" means "toad skin" in Spanish, and the melon earns the name honestly — thick, wrinkled, waxy rind mottled with dark and pale green, occasionally streaked with sugar scars that actually signal high sweetness rather than damage. As it ripens, the green mottling stays but the background colour shifts toward a brighter yellow, and the rind is thick enough that the melon barely releases any aroma while whole, unlike more fragrant varieties. Inside, the pale green-to-white flesh is smooth, tender, and mildly sweet with honeyed, faintly earthy and pear-like notes — closer to honeydew than cantaloupe. Unlike true netted cantaloupes, Piel de Sapo continues to soften a little after picking, and its thick skin means it keeps far longer than most melons, which is why it's traditionally the melon Spanish households save for the holidays.

How to tell it's ripe
The rind won't smell much through its thick skin. Look for a bright yellow background colour and press the blossom end — ripe gives gently. It should also feel heavy for its size.

How to cut & use Piel de Sapo Melon
Halve lengthwise, scoop out the seeds and fibres, then slice into wedges or cube it. Its firm flesh holds its shape well in fruit salads.

How to store Piel de Sapo Melon
Whole: room temperature for a few days if not fully ripe, otherwise refrigerate — its thick rind means it keeps for weeks. Cut fruit: airtight container, use within 4-5 days.
Slice into wedges and eat plain, or pair with cured ham for a classic Spanish combination — its mild honeyed sweetness balances beautifully against something salty.
Rich in vitamin C and potassium, low in calories and mostly water — a light, refreshing way to satisfy a sweet craving.
