Pera Melon — The "Sweet Cucumber" That's Neither, Really
Its Spanish name, pepino dulce, translates to "sweet cucumber," and that's about as close as any single description gets — the flesh sits somewhere between cucumber, honeydew, and cantaloupe, mild and lightly sweet rather than punchy. The skin is smooth and pear-shaped, starting pale green and turning golden-yellow with distinctive purple streaks as it ripens. Unlike a true melon, thumping it tells you nothing useful; the better tests are smell and touch. A ripe one gives off a light, sweet fragrance — not heavy or cloying — and yields slightly to gentle pressure, similar to a ripe nectarine. If yours arrives still mostly green, leave it at room temperature for a few days; it will continue to ripen and colour up off the vine. The skin is technically edible but toughens as the fruit ripens and is usually peeled away before eating.

How to tell when it's ripe
Skip the tapping test — smell and touch work better here. Look for a light, sweet fragrance and skin that gives slightly to gentle pressure, like a ripe nectarine.

How to cut & use Pera Melon
Halve it and scoop out the small central seed cavity with a spoon. Peel away the tougher skin, then slice or dice the flesh.

How to store Pera Melon
Unripe: room temperature, out of direct sun, a few days to ripen. Ripe: refrigerate, use within 4-5 days. Cut fruit: airtight container, use within 2 days.
Halve it, scoop out the small seed cavity, then peel and slice — chilled, it's a refreshing snack on its own or diced into fruit and savoury salads alike.
Low in calories and rich in vitamin C and antioxidants — a light, hydrating fruit that's easy to eat often without overdoing it.
