Sanguinelli — One of the Original Blood Oranges
Sanguinelli is one of the oldest and most widely grown blood orange varieties, first identified in Spain as a natural mutation of another blood orange, and it's still considered a benchmark for the category. The skin often carries a red blush over orange, though the real reveal is inside: flesh that ranges from streaked to deeply, uniformly red, coloured by the same anthocyanin pigments found in berries, which also show up in the flavour — genuinely more raspberry-like and less purely citrus-sharp than a regular orange. Grown organically, without synthetic pesticides, it ripens on the tree and doesn't develop further once picked, so weight is the more reliable freshness check than colour: a heavier fruit for its size means more juice inside.

-
How to tell it's a good one
It won't ripen further after picking, and the red blush varies naturally, so judge by weight — heavier for its size means juicier.
-
How to cut & use Sanguinelli Orange
Peel like any orange and separate into segments, or halve and juice — the deep red juice is especially striking for cocktails or a simple breakfast glass.
-
How to store Sanguinelli Oranges
Room temperature for about a week, or refrigerate for up to a month. Cut fruit: airtight container, use within 2-3 days.
Peel and eat in segments, or juice it for a striking, deep red glass — its berry-forward flavour makes a genuinely different orange juice.
