Tamarillo — Tomato's Tangier, More Exotic Cousin
Tamarillo comes from the Andes, where it's known as "tree tomato" for good reason — it's a close botanical relative, and it shows in the shape and the seeds, but the flavour goes somewhere tomatoes never do. Ripe fruit has smooth, glossy skin in shades of red, orange, or yellow, entirely free of green, with a slight give when pressed. The skin itself is bitter and not meant to be eaten — halve the fruit and scoop the flesh out with a spoon instead. Inside, the tangy, juicy flesh carries notes that shift between tomato, passion fruit, and guava, with the area right around the small edible seeds tending to be sweeter than the flesh nearer the skin. Colour is a rough guide to flavour, too: yellow and orange varieties tend to be sweeter and milder, while red ones keep more tartness even at full ripeness.

How to tell when it's ripe
Look for skin fully coloured red, orange, or yellow, with no green left. It should give slightly when pressed — firm, unripe fruit is too tart and best avoided.
-
How to cut & use Tamarillo
Halve it lengthwise and scoop the flesh out with a spoon, leaving the bitter skin behind. The small seeds throughout are edible.

How to store Tamarillo
Ripens further at room temperature over a few days if needed. Once ripe, refrigerate and use within a week. Cut fruit: airtight container, use within 1-2 days.
Halve it and scoop the flesh with a spoon — skip the bitter skin. Great on its own with a little sugar, or blended into juices, salsas, and chutneys.
Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, plus fibre and antioxidants — an unusual way to get a serious nutrient boost from a single small fruit.
The shipping was excellent, 10 out of 10, and the packaging was just as good. I bought this fruit because I was very curious about the taste, definitely an interesting flavor that everyone seems to perceive differently. For me, it tasted like a mix of tomato, basil, and passion fruit. All the fruits I received were absolutely top-quality, a solid 10/10
