Watermelon — The Spot on the Belly Tells You Everything
A watermelon doesn't ripen once it's cut from the vine, so what you're really doing when you pick one is reading the signs of how it grew, not guessing about what happens next. The most reliable clue is the field spot — the patch on one side where the melon rested on the ground while it grew. A creamy, buttery yellow spot means it stayed on the vine long enough to develop real sweetness; a pale white or greenish spot means it was picked too early and won't improve from here. Brown, web-like scarring on the rind, sometimes called sugar spots, is a bonus sign, not a flaw — it forms where pollinators visited most, and more pollination generally means a sweeter melon. Pick it up: a heavier melon for its size holds more water and juice. The classic knock test still has a place too — a deep, hollow sound is what you want, not a dull thud.

How to tell it's a good one
Look for a creamy yellow field spot, not white or green. Brown webbing on the rind is a good sign. Pick it up — heavier for its size means juicier.

How to cut & use Watermelon
Halve, then slice into wedges or cube it. The rind can also be pickled or used in salads if you don't want to waste it.

How to store Watermelon
Whole: room temperature or refrigerate, use within 1-2 weeks. Cut fruit: airtight container in the fridge, use within 3-4 days.
Slice into wedges or cube it for a fruit bowl — its high water content makes it the most refreshing fruit you can serve on a hot day, no prep beyond a knife.
About 92% water, plus vitamin C and lycopene — one of the most hydrating fruits you can eat, with real nutrients alongside the refreshment.
Dulce
The watermelon was great at taste but it was too ripe and sugary and you had to eat it fast otherwise it would get spoiled
