Curuba — Shaped Like a Banana, Related to Passion Fruit
Curuba, also called banana passionfruit, plays a genuine trick on first impressions — the elongated, yellow, faintly fuzzy shell looks enough like a small banana that the surprise inside is real. Crack it open and you find the same glistening, seed-studded pulp as a classic passion fruit, just a shade more orange and a touch less acidic. It's a genuine staple in Colombia, where it's blended into a milk-based drink called sorbete de curuba. Ripeness is straightforward to judge: the skin starts green and turns pale, soft yellow as it ripens, with a texture that goes from firm to a gentle give, similar to a ripe peach.

-
How to tell it's ripe
Look for pale, soft yellow skin rather than green. It should give slightly under gentle pressure, similar to a ripe peach.
-
How to cut & use Curuba
Halve it lengthwise and scoop the pulp and seeds with a spoon. Strain if you want pure juice, or blend seeds and all for a fuller texture.
-
How to store Curuba
Unripe: room temperature, a few days to ripen. Ripe: refrigerate, use within 4-5 days. Scooped pulp: freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
Halve it and scoop the pulp with a spoon, or blend with milk and sugar for a Colombian-style curuba drink — the tang balances beautifully against the sweetness.
Rich in vitamin C and vitamin A, with a tangy freshness that makes it an easy addition to juices and smoothies.
Interesant fruct, bănuiesc că are multă vitamina C deoarece e cam acruț.
