Galia — The Melon You Choose With Your Nose
Galia was bred in Israel in the 1960s by crossing a cantaloupe with a honeydew, and it inherited the best of both: the netted, corky rind of a cantaloupe and the pale green, succulent flesh of a honeydew, with a sweetness that runs notably high — 13 to 15 Brix, well above most melons. What makes Galia genuinely different to shop for is that stem-end tenderness, the go-to test for most melons, doesn't work reliably here. Instead, ripeness is judged by two things: the rind colour deepening from pale green to a rich golden-orange, and, more importantly, a perfumed, honeyed, almost tropical aroma that becomes unmistakable at the blossom end once the melon is ready. If it doesn't smell like anything, it isn't ripe yet, no matter how it feels in your hand.

How to tell it's ripe
Skip the squeeze test — it doesn't work reliably on Galia. Trust your nose instead: a ripe one has a strong, honeyed, tropical smell at the stem end, alongside a golden-orange rind.

How to cut & use Galia Melon
Halve it, scoop out the seeds, and slice into wedges or cube it. Its dense, succulent flesh works well in fruit salads or blended into a chilled soup.

How to store Galia Melon
Whole: room temperature until fragrant, then refrigerate, use within a week. Cut fruit: airtight container, use within 2-3 days.
Eat it plain, chilled, or pair with prosciutto for a classic antipasto combination — its tropical, honeyed aroma is intense enough to stand on its own.
Rich in vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants, with an unusually high natural sugar content for a melon — a genuinely indulgent-tasting fruit that's still just fruit.
Un gust deosebit.
