Margarida — The Avocado Bred to Be Giant
Margarida is a colossus among avocados — a single fruit regularly weighs close to a kilogram, several times the size of a standard Hass, with skin thick and tough enough to resist the bumps that would bruise a thinner-skinned variety. Cut it open and you'll find pale yellow, buttery flesh with a mild, gently sweet flavor and a notably high pulp-to-seed ratio, so there's less waste around a relatively small pit. It also carries less fat than Hass, which is part of why this variety often ends up blended into sweet drinks and desserts rather than kept strictly savory — a genuinely different way to eat avocado if you've only ever had it on toast. Because the skin stays thick and firm right through ripening, colour alone won't tell you much; the fruit's give under gentle pressure is the real signal. One avocado this size easily serves a whole table, whether you go classic with guacamole or try it the sweeter way.

How to tell when Margarida is ripe
The thick skin stays much the same colour throughout, so skip the colour check. Press gently in your palm — ripe gives slightly all over — and check the stem: easy to pull off with yellow underneath means it's ready.

How to cut & use Margarida Avocado
Slice lengthwise around the seed, twist to separate, then remove the pit with a spoon or a light knife tap. Given its size, one half easily makes two or three servings — scoop, slice, or blend.

How to store Margarida Avocado
Unripe: room temperature, out of direct sun, about 5-7 days to ripen given its size. Ripe: refrigerate, use within 3-4 days. Cut fruit: lemon or lime juice on the flesh, airtight container, use within 2 days.
Its size makes it perfect for sharing — halve it for a big-batch guacamole, or try it the Brazilian way, blended with milk and a little sugar into a sweet, creamy drink.
Rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and plant sterols — Margarida's oil is especially high in beta-sitosterol, plus a solid dose of fibre, potassium, and vitamin E.
