Pineapple — Forget the Leaf-Pull Test, Trust Your Nose
The old trick of tugging a leaf from the crown to check ripeness is more myth than method — a leaf can come away easily on an unripe pineapple too. A better approach is your nose: a ripe pineapple smells sweet and fragrant right at the base, where it was cut from the plant, while one with no smell at all usually isn't ready. Colour helps too, though it varies by variety — look for the shell shifting from green toward golden-brown rather than staying uniformly green. It should also feel heavy for its size and give slightly when pressed. Pineapple continues to soften a little after picking but doesn't get sweeter, so a firm, fragrant one bought slightly underripe is a safer bet than one that's already very soft.

How to tell it's ripe
Smell the base — it should be sweetly fragrant. Look for skin shifting from green toward golden-brown, and check that it feels heavy for its size.

How to cut & use Pineapple
Slice off the crown and base, stand it upright and cut away the skin in strips, then core and slice into rings, wedges, or chunks.

How to store Pineapple
Unripe: room temperature, out of direct sun, a few days to soften. Ripe: refrigerate, use within 3-5 days. Cut fruit: airtight container, use within 2-3 days.
Slice off the crown and base, cut away the skin, then core and slice into rings or chunks — great fresh, grilled, or blended into a smoothie.
Rich in vitamin C and manganese, plus bromelain, a natural enzyme with digestive benefits — a genuinely useful fruit beyond just flavour.
