Primora — The "Black" Tomato That's Actually Brown, and Genuinely Mild

Primora belongs to the small family of so-called "black" heirloom tomatoes, though the real colour is a deep, elegant brown shading into purple and dark red, with green still visible at the shoulders even when ripe. The fruit is ribbed and slightly flattened, and the flesh underneath is dense, almost melting in texture, with very few seeds and a soft sweetness that carries none of the sharpness typical of red tomatoes. That low acidity is genuinely unusual — it's the tomato variety most often recommended for children specifically because there's no tang to make them wince. The colour makes it a natural centrepiece for a summer salad, and the melting texture holds up just as well cooked down into a sauce as it does sliced raw.

  • How to tell it's ripe

Colour deepens to a rich brown-purple with green still visible near the stem — that green shoulder is normal, not a sign of underripeness. It should give slightly when pressed.

  • How to cut & use Primora Tomatoes

Slice around the ribbed shape for clean pieces, or cook it down whole into a sauce — the melting flesh breaks down easily with heat.

  • How to store Primora Tomatoes

Room temperature, out of direct sun, for the best flavour. Refrigerate only once fully ripe, and use within 4-5 days.
