Reed BIO — The Round One With the Thickest, Creamiest Flesh, Grown Without Shortcuts

Reed stands out the moment you see it — round rather than pear-shaped, with thick, pebbly green skin that looks tougher than most avocados, grown here without synthetic pesticides. That thick skin is doing real work: it protects an unusually dense, thick layer of flesh underneath, which is why Reed is often considered one of the creamiest avocados you can get. The flavour is mild and nutty, less assertive than Maluma but richer than Bacon or Ettinger, and the small seed means more usable flesh per fruit than most varieties. Like a handful of other stubborn produce, Reed stays green even at full ripeness, so colour won't help you here — the only reliable test is a gentle press near the stem, which should give slightly without feeling soft. The dense flesh holds its shape exceptionally well when diced, making it a favourite for chunky salads and toppings where you don't want it to turn to mush.

When can it be found on our website?

In season: Feb, Mar, Apr, May. Limited availability: Jan, Jun.

  • How to tell when Reed is ripe

Reed stays green when ripe — don't wait for a colour change. Press gently near the stem; ripe gives slightly without feeling soft. Still hard? Leave at room temperature and check daily.

  • How to cut & use Reed Avocado

Halve around the pit — the round shape means an even cut all around. The dense flesh dices cleanly into firm cubes that hold their shape in salads and bowls.

  • How to store Reed Avocado

Unripe: room temperature, out of direct sun. Ripe: refrigerate, use within 4-5 days — the thick skin helps it hold up well. Cut half: wrap tightly with the pit in.

Dice it rather than mash it — the dense flesh holds its shape beautifully in chunky salads, grain bowls, or as a topping that won't turn to mush.

A thicker layer of flesh per fruit means more monounsaturated fats, potassium, and vitamin E per avocado — a generous, nutrient-dense choice.
